Bulletin Board Competitors

PostAuthor: computerz » Sun Jun 17, 2007 9:27 pm

A year and a half ago when I first installed IntegraMod, I was convinced that we were at par or better than the best BBs out there. Now a year and a half later as I examine one of the major competitors and their features, it appears we have lost alot of ground. Now understandably, that's because of the work put into the new release, as well as work put into phpBB upgrades, and being short-handed.

But are we becoming intent with what is soon becoming a vanilla system? Remember, the features we have now where top of the line 18 months ago. Now these features are standard in some systems such as v-B, who in the last year has incorporated a tremendous amount of features, which I recently discovered by making posts on a forum using that system. I'm only being honest when I say that I was wowed by the enormity (and complexity) of their system, which makes this look vanilla, in many regards.

Yes, I know they have paid developers. What I'm asking is what can we as a community do to step up and make this system better than what it is and put ourselves once again in the forefront of bulletin board systems. Are will we remain complacent with what is slowly becoming average vanilla features?

To say that we are vanilla is just plain stupid. VB cost $160 for a single license, and $30 a year for support, and they still do not offer as much as IM.
IM 140 was downloaded over 12,000 times and 141, over 3,500 times. Now if we charged the same, then we should have a $2,480,000 budget from those downloads to pay a full time programming staff

I'm not saying IM is vanilla, I'm saying that it appears vanilla in a side-by-side comparison to that other system, because that other system surpasses this in so many mods and features. I can list over a dozen features that others are buying into, but which this project does not have, thus my question are we going to remain complacent or seek to jump back out in the forefront not in terms of downloads but in terms of the total number of functional and usable features.

I also wish more people used integramod for productive sites -something of substance. It seems like every substantive website I go to with a forum is using vB. I hate that. Though, I admire it for its dedication to features, I don't like using it, but it seems like if you have to use a forum on a good website nowadays, its going to be either plain phpBB or v-B, usually the latter. It would be nice if more sites used IntegraMod for something of substance rather than for chum-chum forums, that way more of our downloads would actually be seen out there. I am a very avid internet user, and I rarely see an integramod site except for when it's a chum-chum site, or when I come to this circle.

well? I have 3 sites using various version of IM

one is a Papercrafting board for my wife (with paid subscribers)
one is a board for snake breeding
and the last is the site for the band I play in

that count as something other than a chum-chum site?

Yes, I would say the Papercrafting site with paid subscribers is a substative site. I would have to see the other two to make a call on them.

http://www.coach-hvac.com

this site is built totally from IM141. Of course you have to be a member to see most of it, but it seems pretty profesional to me (the gallery is currently not finished)

Because alot of people are under the misconception that if you want a nice site and forum, you have to pay top dollar for it. And what exactly is a 'chum-chum' forum?
