Question for mod developers

I would like to learn how to develop mods. Basically, if I see a phpbb hack or something, I would like to learn how to modify it for IM. Are there any resources, tutorials, or programs that could help me get started?

Another thing that helped me as I got involved is seeing how others had done their mods. Initially, they were mods for phpbb (before I knew of IntegraMod), then it was looking at IntegraMod Mods.
As Dragonsys said, start small, work with things you know first, then move up from there. <img>
