optimizing db

I'm back. *sigh*
So apparently it's not a host issue they say.
This is what I've done:
- cached the templates
- enabled gzip
- debug disabled
- prillian isn't installed
(i'm probably forgetting a few things)
- I've tried setting the cache for the blocks but when i do the userblock one, it screws up and when you refresh the page, you get welcome back someoneelse'snick so I took that one off. The others are set basically to the settings I saw on a post somewhere, I don't even remember now.
The one thing I haven't done is optimize the db, will that remove posts, what does that do exactly and does it make a difference?
It IS a lot faster already but it's not quite there yet.

No, optimizing the db will not remove any content you added. It basically just cleans up a bit, it should also show you if they need to be optimized. But yes it's safe to do so and will most likely help a little.

It's still slow during the day. I don't know what to do anymore <img>

Well:
1. Integramod is a heavily moded portal, so it is not the fastest thing out there, but with a good setup, and a good server it is not a slow portal system either.
2. If your site is on a slower server, or if the servers resources are depleted by other sites, this will affect your site, especially during busy times.
If you and your guest notice it is slower at certain times, it probably means that the server that your site is hosted on is usually busy during those times.

That's what I'm thinking because in the evening, it flies. I keep telling this to the owner but he is dragging his feet. I think I have done everything I can on my end.
This is what I've done
4518 registered users
114663 articles in 11536 topics
Usually about 30 people are on at one time and I think in a day we get 2/300 new posts or so.
- Prillian not installed
- debug off
- gzip enabled
- Style cached (only have one right now)
- Cached the portal blocks
- optimized the db
- upped the php size deal in config.php
- took out the shout box, chat's not active, took out the calendar
- it isn't graphic heavy, just the one banner 15kb.
Also, what is the cron feature on the optimizing and would collapsing the index help?
Thank you so much, I have racked my brain on this and read so many posts and tried everything I've seen.
I just reoptimized the DB, how often do you do this? I did it yesterday and now there are tables that are not ok again...same ones as yesterday.

Anybody? It's still slow and I'm going to have to revert back to just plain old phpbb if I can't get this to improve. I've given it almost 3 weeks of tweaking and I don't know what I can do anymore <img>

I've had this same problem as of recently. When I first moved to the new VPS it wasn't a problem at all.
Now the site is getting around 5 second page loads but my CPU usage spikes to 100% every few seconds and then back down to around 1%.
My host (spry) says that my script needs optimizing.

Anyone have any ideas on how I can check to see which script is causing this spike. This is a sudden recent problem as far as I know.
I installed the garage mod to my forums last night but as far as I can tell that's just a coincidence. I have my statistics (like webalizer for cpanel) updated only once a week and it updated last night which was when this started. Anyone know if that might be part of the problem?
Zac
PS: Even though this was a sudden occurance, I still went through and did everything from that integramod.com link just to make sure. (The integramod link was from a different topic, but it had a list of suggestions such as "remove prillian" disable debug, and etc)

I hit similar problems and th only way out was to upgrade to a more powerful VPS <img>

I have been a strang advocate for Spry for the last 2 years. They used to be fast both in hardware and tech support. I had the same problem as you (ZacFields), a sudden unexplained huge cpu and db overhead. I shut off all but one completely stock IM140 site with only 2 members and no acivity and the cup usage was 100%. Spry has serious issus and they left me hanging with the same advise, to optimize a file that you should not change due to the fact that you do not have enough info about the actual specs of the server/os. I think all the really knowlegeble staff that I used to deal with are gone, and they are overloading thier servers. I say this because through all my problems, they could do nothing but point the finger at me, and I know that nothing had changed in my sever setup in months, and that member activity was way down compared to the previous month when the server was extremely fast.
even now with the dedicated server, there are quite a few things that are misconfigured, or broken, and they cannot/will not fix it. They tell me the dedicated server does not come with tech support. I tell them that if the server were working correctly when they set it up, I would not need tech support, then they ignore me. needless to say, im looking for another dedicated server host...
