De.scription and Message

I seem to be having issues with bots posting messages on my boards. They don't seem to even have to register, but they can post messages that are not very appropriate. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am guessing I must have a hole or a permission set wrong.

You should set all the public forums on your board to Registered, this way guest can read the post, but need to register in order to post.

Go into your ACP / Forum Admin / Permissions and select each forum to set the desired permission.

You also have the option of setting your forums to the following default settings.

Registered [Hidden] ]Private[/color]: Everyone can view, but only specified accounts, or user groups and up can post.

Private [Hidden] ]Moderators[/color]: Everyone can view, but only Moderators can post.

Moderators [Hidden]: Only Moderators can view or post.

The settings above are the default settings, you can of-course modify any forum to the settings to suet your needs.

You can also create user groups, and set their permissions as well.

Thanks! I must have missed that. I thought maybe I had something really messed up.

Another option is to leave the forums open, but go to the Approval section of the Admin pages and enable approval for those forums. The only possible problem I have seen is that in 1.4.0 some things (like digest) ignored approval and would forward the stuff anyway. I haven't tried 1.4.1 on my forum just yet, so I don't know if this is fixed.

Were just starting to get this problem with spammers now.

I have decided just to ban the spammers ip adress by going 85.*.113.*

See how that goes.

I have seen sites that have confermation codes that need to be entered just under the subject feild before it's submit.. Any one know if this mod is avaiable ? it would be good to have implimented for just guest posts.

If you search in the archives for "jwernerny" and "visual confirmation", you should come across a mod I did to 1.4.0 about a year ago. It was fairly quick and easy and would probably drop into 1.4.1 quickly. The big question is if something like that is already in 1.4.1

It's a feature in 1.4.1, but I believe that joey_4ers is using 1.4.0.

I'm still using the older version..

To scared to upgrage atm .. I tried it once so far and ran into alot of issues.. Wait till i get a bit more experienced <img>

The banning of that ip address i listed above fixed pritty much 98% of our spaming issues .. I get one, Once in a while .. better than 20 or so a week..
