Stripping some features?

PostAuthor: ZacFields » Wed Apr 18, 2007 10:16 am

Hey Everyone!

I've been experimenting with removing a few modifications that I don't particularly need in hopes of creating a little bit faster-running E-Tegra. (I'm doing this on a test board)

My question would be this: Which mods would you say "suck up" the most resources. I want to be as efficient as possible with this because removing modifications can be a lot more difficult than adding them.

This is just an experiment only. I understand we have a lite version of IM but unfortunately I've had troubles to get that to work on my server so I thought I would create my own stripped version of IM to see if I can get a little bit more efficient for larger boards who don't want to upgrade hosting.

Myself, I don't use Forum Tour, Knowledge Base, Digests or Tell A Friend.
I could go without those for starters LOL.

same for me, and including as well "Personal Albums", "Acronyms" and the calendar box at the index bottom.

I do believe that these features are only usefull for a negligible amount of IM users and should not be presented as standard in the package.

I have removed the small calendar box at the bottom of the forum index page. I will have to look at my stock version of IM and see if I can remember how I did that. It's pretty nice though because it makes the shoutbox span the whole width of the forum.

Lots of my users use the personal albums because I have the block on my portal page that displays random album pictures.

The only problem is that in order to remove these mods, I will need the exact installation instructions that were used. These can be very hard to find if there is a newer version of that mod out than what we have.

Perhaps I can begin compiling ways to remove modifications from your forums. I think the integramod package is perfect like it is, but if there are some mods that you don't need, that would benefit things like pageload times if you were able to remove them I'd like for us to be able to provide some assistance/instructions to remove them.

I will get back to you guys soon.

Hmm, loose chatspot, statistics, kb, albums, tour, calendar, prillian (the bits that are left even when its not installed!!), contacts, my cookies, and paypal.

Thats quite a bit! <img>

I would not be to happy about losing any cookie power/features.

A better way could well be a secondary or advanced install .script, this way anyone who has setup IM once (learned it) could use the advance .script to customize each install.

An idea... how about make some guides on how to de-install each of the "hot" mods, then you can pick which ones to deinstall (like the complete prillian deinstall guide ferralcat did a while ago on the old forums (may be in the archive or in here now, not sure tho!)

There's a lot of reasons *not* to start with a blank php and install your own mods. Here are a few to name:

1. You get almost zero support from phpbb if your forum is heavily modded. And obviously you wouldn't be getting any support here.
2. Upgrades. Your upgrading options consist of getting the code changes for each upgrade and HOPING that they match up. If they don't match up and you're not knowlegeable enough to make it work, again it is difficult to get support.
3. If you only wanted a few mods from E-Tegra removed, the time it would take to remove them would certainly be a lot shorter than it would take to start from scratch and add mods.
4. If you have existing members/posts, converting back to a stock phpbb only to add 75% of the mods integrmod already has would be a waste of time.

In closing, we actually have an IM-Lite but I think that the project was more trouble than it was worth because we have limited amount of devs on this project right now. E-Tegra-Lite is something I would like for us to start back up, so I was exploring ways in which we could make that happen.

As it lies right now, if I were to try to make an integrmod lite I would basically have to start back at an original PHPBB but that wasn't exactly the road I wanted to take.

gotcha... just wondering <img>

now say you did strip integramod... any updates that are done have the potential of being a royal PIA, since much of the code would be removed, right?

Well the idea is to get E-Tegra's "Lite" project started back up again. But as of now I don't imagine we have anyone who wants to take this project up.

We'll keep you posted. I may work on something but it would first have to be approved by all the other devs and we would have to find people to help with upgrade paths and such.

What would be interesting is to know which mods are really taking a lot of time when pages are loaded. From that point, it would be smart to check is those mods are really useful. Why spend lots of time to remove a mod that is not consuming any ressource...

That's definitely the idea sanji ^^^

75% of what I would like to do is remove the mods that consume the most resources, and the other 25% would be removing some mods that would be better off to be added later by the user.

If anyone has any information of what mods use the most resources I'm all ears. It's a really hard thing to test, though, and depending on board size, some mods consume more resources than others.

Statistics, donations, and paypal seem to drag the forums speed right down!

Paypal and donations removal:

Chatspot (this is NOT the shoutbox!!!) and stats removal:
http://www.integramod.com/forum/viewtop ... highlight=

Removal of these 4 makes a hell of a speed increase! And believe me, you want to get rid of things that slow down the forums, these are them!!!!
