Login issues

PostAuthor: shyra » Sat Dec 27, 2008 3:56 pm

Over the past month, I've developed login issues with my board (IM141).

1. Personally, I have to login like normal and then it throws me back to the forum home page without being logged in. I clear cookies and then login and it works. If I clear cookies first, it won't log me in.

2. Others are having issues where they say they are having to login and or/logout twice. I'm not sure exactly what they're trying to convey, but it sounds a lot like what I'm experiencing. They're just dealing with it in different ways.

Attempts at Solutions:

1. Problem happens in both FireFox (newest version) and IE7.
2. Cleared all cookies, temp files, etc. from browsers prior to accessing forum. No luck.
3. Tried logging out after being logged in, thinking perhaps something was getting lost by just leaving the site without logging out. No luck.

Help!! The board has been running fine for nearly a year with nary a problem. I made no changes, updates, etc., to the board prior to this problem appearing. I did update to the latest version of Firefox, and of course M$ has had several "critical updates" but nothing I can trace back to the problem.

Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them? And if so, HOW do I get things back to normal? I'm about to open my board to public access, but I won't until I can get this issue resolved.

Thanks!

This could be a problem with the cookie path, what is yours set to. It can be found in configuration options.

It could also be something that your host has done, an update to the server software etc. You may want to check with them as well.

I had the same thing, and I think Helter mentioned deleting your browsers cookies and cache.

Here are my cookie settings (they're default)

Cookie domain (left blank)
Cookie name im_b_248
Cookie path /
Cookie secure Disabled

I've run IM since v132, and I've never had this issue come up before.

As for browser cookies, etc., that was the first thing I checked/cleared. Being IT this many years, I know the messes those can cause.

Since I can't trace it back to updates to Firefox/Windows/IE, and since I'd not made any changes to the config before this happened, I figured it had to be either something on the host side, or a corruption someplace.

I'm game to try something new with the cookie config, but I'm whistling in the dark there, so any help you can give would be appreciated!

Try these settings, save them and clear site and browser cookies.

Cookie domain .yoursite.com
Cookie name im_b_248
Cookie path /
Cookie secure Disabled

Make sure that you have the period . in front of the cookie domain.

Also, if your forum is in a subfolder, for example, http://www.yoursite.com/forum/index.php then you'll want to change the cookie path to match the forum root. In the case of the example it would be /forum/

Teelk, that -seems- to have done the trick, but before I state "solved" I'd like to run with it for a few days just to make sure (as well as let the others on my board try it). Some of the things I did prior to this (like deleting browser cookies) "solved" the problem for a day or two, and then we were right back in the mix again.

One pattern I think I've just now noticed is that the issue seems to be only with those of us who pop in and out of the board several times a day. A friend who mostly logs in once a day in the early morning hours hasn't had the problem. The four of us who are in and out often are the ones having the issue.

I'll pop back in here in a couple of days to let you know if your suggestion solved the issue, but so far, so good. And I give you a huge "thank you!"

I had that issue a while back and ran the cookie mod and all was well on the home front.

Teelk, told you I'd pop in and let you know if that fixed the problem.

It DID fix the login problems (at least for now). I say that because the first precursor of the problem just started on Wednesday once again - Prillian.

The user who first had the problem informed me that Prillian is once again not popping up when she logs on - either at work or at home. Since we work together, I watched her log on and she's right... it's not popping up and there doesn't seem to be any reason for it.

Most of us enter straight into the forum page, but it wasn't long after her problem with Prillian that we began having the login problems. So, I'm holding my breath. <img>

Any idea why Prillian would suddenly stop popping up - either on first entry or on refresh? (pop-up blockers are not to blame here...)

To test if cookies are working and paths are correct... (may be unrelated but it is useful)
First logout...
Clear browser cache (if using Firefox close it and reopen)...
Login, and note the address bar... you should see the sid index.php?sid=xxxxxx or porta.php?sid=xxxxxxx (depending)...
Now click on the index link and after the page refreshes the sid should be gone... If the sid remains you have a problem with cookies path...
