ban message in sig on userban

is it possible to make a mod that changes the user's signature when he's banned?

like "I've been banned..."

when the ban expires the normal signature is shown back.

I suspect it may be possible, sadly I do not have the skill to. I thught there may have been an easier way to put this in the left profile block beside the user's post, but I have not been able to find it yet.
