Will this delay the 1.41 release?

no, it will not. Though it is not a critical update, it is an easy one, and should not cause any trouble with any of the mods. I think the only thing delaying the release at this point is the hecktic holiday scheduals of our chief devs.

I was looking at it, but I got stuck on the usercp_register.php part and on the privmsg.php part.

Has anyone here applied it, how, and had any problems interfering w/IM?

Is there an update being done to upgrade IM 1.40 to the latest phpBB version?

if you do a search, you will find this thread, i think you will find that there will be an upgrade for 140 and the upcoming 141 in the future

without known much about IM, i'm not that keen on trying to apply the upgrade myself. in regards to 1.41, since i'm currently running 1.40 at the current moment, how much problems will i have with current mods i have installed when 1.41 is officially released in upgrading?

As far as I know any mods that were installed on your 1.40 board will have to go through a re-install as some file edits will be over written with the new 1.41 files, so it will be pure try and see if the mods you want will work, but I am sure most of them will with either no or just a little tweaking.

I'll be happy as long as my FFXI character mod stays in tact
