ok, maybe i have been working too hard and too long, if i wanted a forum to be visible only to registered members up, and i do not want anyone to be able to post in it except moderators up.

what setting would i use in the forum admin?

I've done this sort of thing several times. Bring up the forum in the ACP/Forum Admin/Management+ and make the settings look like this:
[flash=,:24t28s8a]http://www.navyjrotc.us/portal/files/forum1.gif[/flash:24t28s8a]

Of course you should modify this as necessary. This example would allow registered users to vote in polls and submit a post report, but not create a regular post or reply to one.

Hope this helps.

The Moderator preset should work for you as well, except of course that the View is set to "All". It sounded like you didn't want non-registered users to see the forum at all, so in my example above I switched that to Reg. Personally I don't use the presets all that often because I like to think about each and every option each time to be sure I fine tune each forum for exactly what I want.
